GP Conference at the Sydney Adventist Hospital
Lifestyle Medicine in General Practice: The Future of Australian Healthcare?
Tuesday 29 August 2023
“It was a privilege for the ELIA Lifestyle Medicine Centre team to provide an evening of education to 40 General Practitioners and health professionals.
We provided 2 hours of TED-style talks focusing on exercise as medicine, the power of plant-based living, the importance of health coaching in behaviour change and an overview of lifestyle medicine.
The evening enabled attending health professionals an insight into the importance of each facet of lifestyle medicine in a practical and enjoyable manner.
As work for a GP is often solitary, these meetings not only provide education but time to collaborate, share practice ideas and time to expand how they can help patients to achieve their best outcomes.”
Dr Andrea Matthews, Medical Director, ELIA Lifestyle Medicine Centre.
Lifestyle Medicine is the therapeutic use of evidence-based lifestyle interventions that treat and prevent diseases by addressing the underlying causes of lifestyle disease rather than the symptoms. It is compatible with medicines and surgical intervention, but if used intensively, may prevent, or reduce their need.
Our interdisciplinary team of Lifestyle Medicine doctors, exercise physiologist, health and wellness coaches, and dietitian, will help support and coach you or your patients through the areas of nutrition, movement, mindset and connectedness.
We invite General Practitioners and health professionals to contact us at the ELIA Lifestyle Medicine Centre to discover:
When did Lifestyle Medicine become Real Medicine?
Dr. Andrea Matthews introduces you to Lifestyle Medicine as a subspeciality and how it can be used in General Practice.
The Magic Pill.
Exercise is a highly effective and underutilised therapy. Shai Lawson, Exercise Physiologist, outlines the evidence-based benefits of exercise in the treatment of disease, the variance of exercise recommendations between diseases, and the role a GP plays in prescribing physical activity for patients.
The Role of Health Coaching in Behaviour Change.
Geena-Rose Burton, Registered Nurse & Health Coach, and Erin Keegan, Registered Nurse & Wellness Coach, provide coaching techniques that extract the why, rewire the brain and its unhealthy habit loops, and provide support, accountability, and sustained motivation for success.
Plant Power.
Jane Freeman, Accredited Practicing Dietitian and Sports Dietitian explains how treatment outcomes can be enhanced with plant-forward eating. Examine the evidence for the use of plant-forward diets to assist with gut health, weight loss, treatment and reversal of insulin resistance and type.
