ELIA Lifestyle Medicine Centre (LMC) is seeking 91 diabetes patients to participate in our FREE 12-week lifestyle intervention program that will empower you on your wellness journey to transform your life.
Recent research from the DiRECT Trial and more recently DiRECT-AUS has demonstrated that sustained diabetes remission could be achieved with as little as 10% weight loss, using lifestyle modification.*
The ELIA LMC diabetes program aims to help diabetes patients manage their type 2 diabetes with healthy lifestyle habits that are often difficult to achieve on their own.

At the ELIA Lifestyle Medical Centre (LMC), we aim to assess how effective this program is in successfully managing your diabetes through fitness guidance, cooking and nutrition workshops, and lifestyle coaching under the expert guidance of clinicians specialising in lifestyle medicine.
You may be eligible to join this FREE research study if:
You are aged 18-70 years
Older patients can be included on a case-by-case basis.
Your Body mass index (BMI) greater than 27kg/m2. Click here to check your BMI.
Are available to attend our clinic in Wahroonga each week for a 12-week period.

What to Expect
The ELIA LMC research study involves participating in a 12-week lifestyle intervention program that includes in-person appointments with an interdisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, health coaches, exercise physiologists, and dietitians. The program will also include follow-up assessments at 6 and 12 months and will take place at the ELIA Lifestyle Medicine Centre (LMC) at the Sydney Adventist Hospital.
Each week, you will receive personalised appointments along with a comprehensive Diabetes Support Plan. You can expect to enjoy access to a series of educational videos, articles, nutrition and diet plans, exercise and workouts, and other great activities that will guide and coach you towards positive lifestyle habits.
Program Timeline:
Week 1: Individual consultations, questionnaire completion, blood draw, and medical history collection.
Weeks 2-11: Weekly clinical sessions with clinicians across various modalities, cooking and nutrition workshops, exercise workouts, education and lifestyle coaching.
Week 12: Final consultations blood draw, and assessments
Participate in a groundbreaking diabetes wellness program.

Your safety and confidentiality are our top priority. As part of the study, you will receive a unique ID number, and all data we collect will be aggregated to protect the privacy of your personal and health information.

We have provided a screening application form on this website. Once you have submitted your pre-screening, our team will evaluate this and get in touch with you to discuss your suitability for this program. Successful applicants will be invited to a face-to-face meeting at the ELIA Lifestyle Medicine Centre at the Sydney Adventist Hospital to discuss next steps, and gain approval to join the study.

Participating in this program will involve adapting your current diabetes management plan, including changes to your diet, exercise and other lifestyle habits. The staff at the ELIA LMC are medically trained and will work with you to monitor your abilities, progress and health. A detailed outlined of potential risks is covered in your discussion with our clinician before you provide consent to participate in this program.

No. You will not incur fees for participating in this study, however, incidentals like parking, travel etc will be the responsibility of the participant.

Adventist Health in the South Pacific Division of the Seventh-day Adventist Church has provided the funds for this study.

The results of this study will be used in presentations, at conferences and may be published in peer-reviewed journals. You will not be identified in the results. Results of the study will be provided to you, if you wish.

This study will continue for 9 months after the 12-week program has been completed. During this time, you will have follow-up consultations with the program doctor and have blood taken for analysis at 6 months and again at 12 months from program commencement. We encourage you to consult your doctor about how best to continue your diabetes treatment and management after the program.
